ECOLOGICAL ACTIVISM: Challenging the Powerbase

McPherson Lounge, Alumni Hall
University of Windsor

LIZ BENNEIAN, ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST

Ms. Benneian will discuss how consumerism solidifies the traditional
patriarchal powerbase and how ecological activism challenges that
powerbase representing a more equitable, just, responsible and
sustainable world view. She will also include in her presentation
information on how social change happens and offer advice on
effective advocacy - all illustrated with current real world examples
from grassroots groups around Ontario.

All students, staff, faculty, and community members
are encouraged to attend this event to gain valuable
insight into Environmental Activism.

As President of Oakvillegreen Conservation Association with a background in
journalism and editing, Benneian has taught grassroots groups how to become
more effective advocates through Organize to Win seminars and successfully
fought plans to build an incinerator in Halton, Ontario, besides other projects that
are detrimental to the environment. In 2007, she was awarded both Oakville’s
Individual Community Spirit Award and the Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship
Award for outstanding contributions to her community. Last June, she was
chosen as Earth Day Canada’s National Hometown Hero for 2009 and in February
2010, she received an award from the Ontario Heritage Trust in recognition for her
success in conserving the Province’s natural heritage.

FIRST T-PARTY MEETING

We are pleased to announce that the Windsor Pride Community will be holding what we hope will be our first monthly meeting of our new Transgender social gathering or "T-Party" at the Windsor Pride Community Resource and Education Centre located at 422 Pelissier Street in Windsor on Saturday, November 20. We are planning to begin with an informal, non-structured evening to serve more as an opportunity for those in the Transgender community and their allies to get to know each other. Depending on the needs and numbers of those attending, we will restructure future evenings as appropriate.

Our kick-off meeting is scheduled for 7:00 to 10:00 PM on Sat Nov 20 with coffee, tea and soft drinks available. There are change facilities available for those who would like to use them but dressing is certainly not required.

We hope that all transgender people, both male-to-female and female-to-male or gender questioning, will be able to attend and if you know of any other transgender, questioning or allies, please forward this note on to them. If you are interested in helping organize this event, please contact the Centre at 519-973-4656 let us know.

Although our meetings will be informal, we hope that you will look at them as a starting point for any other activities you may have in mind.

We hope that you will put the T-Party on your calendar and that we will see you here on Saturday, November 20.
