Volunteer and Work Study

In the fall OPIRG has several work study and WISE positions available to students who qualify. Office Assistants, Library Assistants, Diversity Trainers, Radio Host(s) and Web Designers are needed.

We also have many volunteer positions available (below).

OPIRG can only operate with the assistance of volunteers. We are only as good as the people who get involved.

Many people choose an Action Group such as the Environmental Group, the Anti-Racism Group, the Animal Rights Group, Consumer Advocacy, the Media Group, etc. for their activism. Each group has its own list of positions such as Volunteer Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, etc.

Want to help us in our work on environmental and social justice but don’t know where? We need volunteers in the office. For example, if you're interested in developing administrative skills you may wish to take the job of an Administrative Assistant. Volunteering as a Resource Centre Assistant would be a valuable experience for individuals who would like to read about the various issues we work on and practice working on computer databases. If you're interested in journalism we are always looking for people to work on our Newspaper and Radio Show. We also need people to help out with Promotion, and Fundraising and other Special Events.

Of all the volunteer opportunities being a Board Member is the most intensive and also the most challenging. The board is responsible for the long- term viability of the organization - ensuring an office and resource centre is maintained, staff are hired and supervised, adequate training for volunteers is provided and the finances of the PIRG are handled in a responsible fashion. The skills developed include learning to work as a team player, administrative, facilitating and organization. Board members are elected every spring but ex-officio positions are available for persons that want to be involved in board operations between elections. For the vast majority of our board business, ex-officio members are treated just like other members of the board and participate in decision-making.

All these positions involve working with people so volunteering is a great way to get involved and meet people who share your values as well as gaining experience to add to your résumé.

Please call or email us if your are interested in. If you are interested in helping please email opirg@uwindsor.ca or phone the OPIRG office at 519-2536-3000 ext. 3872
